Deck permits in Lexington, KY

A plain-English overview, not legal advice. Rules change and every city differs, so confirm with your building office before you build.

Lexington (Fayette County)

LFUCG's Deck Help Guide says a permit is needed for:

  • all decks attached to a house
  • freestanding decks 200 sq ft or larger
  • decks serving the primary exit door
  • decks 30 inches or more above grade

The guide is based on the Kentucky residential code at the time it was written, and shows guards at least 36 inches high with openings under 4 inches. Building Inspection: (859) 258-3770, and the Homeowners Corner. Contractors must be registered with LFUCG to pull permits.

Surrounding towns and counties

Nicholasville, Georgetown, Winchester, Versailles, Richmond and Paris each have their own city or county building office (for example, Paris permits go through the Paris-Bourbon County Joint Planning Commission). Where a county has no local inspection program, the Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction lists the state inspector. Check your town's page below.
