Decks and Kentucky weather

Deck with railings and lighting at dusk (illustrative)

Central Kentucky gets a bit of everything: hot, humid summers, winters that cycle above and below freezing, and spring storms.

Freeze-thaw and footings

Water that freezes in the ground can lift shallow footings. Footings must reach the frost depth your building office requires and sit on undisturbed soil; the Bluegrass region's clay soils drain slowly, so grading water away from the deck matters too.

Humidity and shade

Wood boards in damp, shady yards can mildew and check. Leave airflow under low decks, keep gaps between boards clear, and consider capped composite or PVC where the deck stays damp.

Summer sun and storms

Dark composite gets hot in July sun; lighter colors, shade sails or a pergola help. After severe storms, check railings, posts and the ledger for movement.

Maintenance calendar

  • Spring: wash, check fasteners and railings, re-seal wood if water soaks in.
  • Fall: clear leaves so boards dry out over winter.
  • Winter: use plastic shovels and avoid rock salt on composite unless the maker allows it.
